On Depop, photos get the first look, but the description closes the sale. A good one answers the questions buyers would otherwise message you about: what is it, will it fit, what’s the condition.

Here’s a structure that works for most items, plus templates you can copy.

The structure

  1. Hook: one line that sells the look or the feeling.
  2. What it is: brand (if known), item, style, material, era if you’re reasonably sure.
  3. Fit and size: tagged size, how it fits, and measurements.
  4. Condition: honest and specific, including any flaws.
  5. Styling or extras (optional): one line on how to wear it.
  6. Hashtags: a few that describe the item.

Writing each part

The hook

Short and specific beats clever. Describe the look, not just the item:

  • “The coziest Nordic yoke cardigan for cold mornings.”
  • “Perfectly worn-in straight leg jeans with a great fade.”
  • “Chunky 90s-style leather loafers, ready for autumn.”

Avoid shouting (ALL CAPS, lots of emoji) and claims you can’t back up like “rare” or “authentic.”

What it is

Give the facts buyers filter and search for:

  • Brand only if it’s on the label. If not, “unbranded” or “handmade” is fine.
  • Material if you know it from a tag; if you don’t, say “feels like” or leave it out.
  • Era only if you’re reasonably sure, and hedge it: “likely 90s” rather than “1993.”

Fit and size

This is where most questions come from:

  • Tagged size, plus how it fits: “Tagged M, fits like a relaxed S/M.”
  • Two or three key measurements. See how to measure clothes for listings.
  • Model or mannequin info if you’ve shown it worn: “Model is 5’7” and usually a size 8.”

Condition

Be specific about flaws and where they are. Use the condition terms buyers know, then explain:

Great used condition. Light fading on the knees and a tiny mark on the back pocket (pictured).

Hashtags

Use a handful that describe the item’s style, era or category, such as #fairisle #handknit #cottagecore. Don’t add brands or trends that don’t apply. It’s against Depop’s rules and buyers find it annoying.

Templates

Copy these and fill in the blanks. Anything in square brackets is a detail you need to add.

Before you publish

  • Fill in every blank in square brackets.
  • Check the size and measurements match your photos.
  • Make sure every flaw you mention is photographed.
  • Fill in Depop’s item details (brand, size, condition, color) too. Buyers filter by them.

Selling the same item on eBay too? An eBay title works very differently. See how to write an eBay title that gets found, and compare marketplaces in where to sell secondhand.

Questions

How many hashtags should I use on Depop?

Only a handful, and only ones that describe the item. Depop limits how many hashtags you can add, and listings stuffed with unrelated brand or trend tags can be removed.

Should I put measurements in a Depop description?

Yes. Sizes vary a lot between brands and decades, especially for vintage. Measurements answer the most common question before it’s asked.

How long should a Depop description be?

Short enough to scan on a phone. A one-line hook, three to five lines of details, then hashtags is plenty for most items.
